The Releases tab on your Official Artist Channel (OAC) is one of the most visible sections for fans browsing your channel. It auto-populates from your distributor's metadata, showing albums and singles in one consolidated view. Understanding how it works helps you ensure your catalog appears correctly.
What the Releases Tab Shows
The Releases section (previously called "Albums & singles") displays all official releases delivered to YouTube through your distributor. This includes:
- Albums (LPs)
- EPs
- Singles
- Compilations where you are the primary artist
Each release card shows the album artwork, title, release year, and track count. Clicking on a release takes the viewer to the release page with all tracks listed (see YouTube Help: Official Artist Channel sections).
Note YouTube renamed this section from "Albums & singles" to "Releases" in 2024 to better reflect the variety of content types artists release.
How Content Gets There
The Releases tab pulls data from your distributor's DDEX feed. DDEX (Digital Data Exchange) is the industry-standard format for delivering music metadata to platforms. When your distributor sends a release to YouTube Music, the metadata includes:
- Release title
- Release date
- Track listing
- Album artwork
- ISRC codes for each track
- Artist credits (primary, featured, remix)
YouTube's system parses this data and generates Art Tracks for each song. Those Art Tracks are then grouped into releases based on the metadata, and the release appears in your Releases tab.
Requirements for releases to appear:
| Requirement | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| You are listed as primary artist | Featured artist credits do not populate your Releases tab |
| Distributor uses DDEX 3.6+ | Older feed versions may not support all features |
| Release is live on YouTube Music | Processing can take 1-3 weeks after delivery |
| OAC is claimed | Topic channels do not have a Releases tab |
What Does Not Appear in the Releases Tab
Several types of content will not show up, even if you expect them:
Karaoke releases: YouTube explicitly excludes karaoke versions from the Releases tab. These may still exist as Art Tracks but will not surface in this section.
Multiple versions of the same release: If you have a standard version, deluxe version, and clean version of an album, only one version appears. YouTube selects the "primary" version based on factors like track count and release date (see YouTube Music Help: Official Artist Channel sections).
Releases where you are only featured: If you appear as "Artist A feat. Your Name," that release shows on Artist A's channel, not yours.
User-uploaded content: Only Art Tracks delivered through official distribution appear. Videos you upload yourself, even full albums, do not populate the Releases tab.
Very recent releases: New releases can take 1-3 weeks to process and appear after delivery to YouTube Music.
How Does the Releases Tab Order Content: Popularity vs. Recency?
YouTube organizes releases in the tab using two primary factors:
- Recency: Recently released content appears prominently
- Popularity: Frequently viewed or trending releases surface higher
This means a hit single from last year might appear above a new release if it is still generating significant traffic. The ordering is dynamic and changes based on viewer behavior (see YouTube Help: Official Artist Channel sections).
Tip You cannot manually reorder the Releases tab. The algorithm determines placement based on performance and recency. Focus on driving traffic to new releases if you want them featured prominently.
How Do You Troubleshoot Missing Releases?
If a release you expect to see is not appearing, work through this checklist:
Verify the release is live on YouTube Music Search for your release in the YouTube Music app or web player. If it does not appear there, the issue is with delivery, not the Releases tab.
Check your artist credit Open one of the tracks and verify you are listed as the primary artist, not a featured artist. If the credit is wrong, contact your distributor to correct the metadata.
Confirm your OAC is active The Releases tab only exists on Official Artist Channels. Topic channels do not have this feature. Verify your OAC by looking for the music note icon next to your channel name.
Wait for processing New releases can take up to 3 weeks to appear after delivery. If your release went live recently, give it time.
Contact your distributor If the release is live on YouTube Music with correct credits and your OAC is active, but it still does not appear after 3 weeks, contact your distributor. They can check the DDEX feed for issues and submit a metadata update if needed.
How Do You Fix Incorrect Release Information?
If a release appears but has wrong information (incorrect title, wrong artwork, missing tracks), the fix goes through your distributor.
Common metadata issues:
- Wrong album artwork: Your distributor needs to redeliver with corrected artwork
- Incorrect release date: Contact distributor to update metadata
- Missing tracks: Check if all tracks were delivered and have correct ISRC codes
- Wrong artist name spelling: Distributor metadata update required
YouTube does not allow artists to directly edit release metadata. All corrections must flow through your distributor's DDEX feed (see YouTube Help: Fix incorrect track, album, or artist information).
Warning Metadata corrections can take 2-4 weeks to process. If you catch an error before release, it is far easier to fix than after the release is live.
How Does the Releases Tab Differ From Your Uploaded Music Videos?
Your Releases tab and your Videos/Uploads section serve different purposes:
| Section | Content | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Releases | Art Tracks grouped by album/single | Distributor metadata |
| Videos | Music videos, visualizers, lyric videos you uploaded | Your direct uploads |
| Shorts | Short-form content you uploaded | Your direct uploads |
A well-optimized OAC has both: the Releases tab provides a complete discography of audio releases, while your Videos section showcases official music videos and visual content. Fans browsing your channel can easily find either format.
How Can You Maximize Your Releases Tab?
While you cannot directly control what appears, you can influence discoverability:
Ensure clean, consistent metadata: Use the same artist name spelling across all releases. Inconsistent names can cause releases to fragment across different artist profiles.
Release through YouTube-approved partners: Your distributor must be in YouTube's Music Partner Services Directory. Major distributors (DistroKid, TuneCore, CD Baby, UnitedMasters, etc.) all qualify.
Claim your OAC early: The Releases tab only becomes available after OAC status is granted. Claim your OAC as soon as you are eligible so your catalog is properly displayed.
Drive traffic to new releases: The algorithm factors popularity into ordering. Promoting a new release helps it surface prominently in the Releases tab.
