Why Emerging Markets Matter

The next billion music listeners will not come from the US, UK, or Western Europe. They are coming from India, China, sub-Saharan Africa, and Southeast Asia. These regions represent both the largest untapped audiences and the fastest growth rates in streaming.

Sub-Saharan Africa saw recorded music revenue grow by 24.7% in 2023, the only region globally to exceed 20% growth. India's music market is projected to reach $2.9 billion by 2026, growing at 14.7% annually. Asia Pacific as a whole is expected to expand at an 11.6% CAGR, reaching $17.2 billion by 2033.

But reaching these listeners requires more than uploading to Spotify. Each market has dominant local platforms that Spotify and Apple Music do not control. If your distributor does not deliver to JioSaavn in India, Tencent Music in China, or Boomplay in Africa, you are invisible to most of the local audience.

Key Regional Platforms by Market

Understanding which platforms matter in each region is the first step.

India

The Indian streaming market has consolidated significantly. As of early 2025, only two major domestic platforms remain after Wynk Music shut down in late 2024 and Hungama announced closure in April 2025.

| Platform | Status | Notes |
|----------|--------|-------|
| JioSaavn | Active | Part of Reliance Jio platform, free streaming for Jio mobile subscribers |
| Gaana | Active | Acquired by Times Group in 2023, 1.4M+ paid subscribers |
| Spotify | Active | Market leader with ~3M paid users in India |
| YouTube Music | Active | Strong presence via Google platform |
| Apple Music | Active | ~200K paid users, smaller market share |

JioSaavn survives because it is vertically integrated with India's largest telecom operator. Free unlimited music for Jio network subscribers makes it a default choice for hundreds of millions of users.

China

China's streaming market is dominated by two major players, with Tencent Music controlling 60-80% market share.

| Platform | MAUs | Parent Company |
|----------|------|----------------|
| Kugou | 245M+ | Tencent Music (TME) |
| QQ Music | 194M+ | Tencent Music (TME) |
| Kuwo | 169M+ | Tencent Music (TME) |
| NetEase Cloud Music | 151M+ | NetEase |

In 2021, China's antitrust regulator ordered TME to end exclusive licensing deals with labels, opening the market. Both Sony Music and other major labels now distribute to both Tencent and NetEase platforms.

For independent artists, TME Music Cloud provides a distribution bridge into the Chinese market, covering licensing, rights management, and over 200 domestic and international platforms.

Africa

Africa is a mobile-first streaming market where local platforms have deeper relationships with the industry than global services.

| Platform | Reach | Key Feature |
|----------|-------|-------------|
| Boomplay | 60M+ registered users | Pre-installed on Transsion phones (Tecno, Infinix, Itel) |
| Audiomack | Strong in Nigeria, Ghana | Free access, offline downloads, low data usage |
| Mdundo | East Africa focus | Localized content, mobile payment integration |
| Spotify | Growing presence | 146% consumption growth in Nigeria (2024) |

Boomplay's distribution deal with phone manufacturers gives it a significant advantage. Transsion phones dominate African markets, so Boomplay comes pre-installed on millions of devices. Burna Boy became the first African artist to reach 200 million streams on Boomplay, with 85% of listeners being African residents.

In February 2025, Warner Music expanded its Audiomack licensing agreement to 47 additional countries, signaling the platform's growing importance.

Middle East

Anghami dominates the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region.

| Platform | Reach | Notes |
|----------|-------|-------|
| Anghami | 120M registered users, 2.5M paid subscribers | First legal Arab-world streaming platform |
| Spotify | Growing | Expanded presence in UAE, Saudi Arabia |
| Apple Music | Present | Standard global coverage |

Anghami partners with 47 telecom operators across MENA and offers 100M+ Arabic and international songs. In December 2025, Anghami joined a streaming bundle with Disney+ and MBC's Shahid for Gulf countries.

Which Distributors Cover Emerging Markets

Not all distributors deliver to all platforms. Before choosing a distributor, verify coverage for your target markets.

Distributor JioSaavn Tencent/NetEase Boomplay Anghami Pricing Model
Symphonic Yes Yes Yes Yes Label services, commission
TuneCore Yes Yes (NetEase) Yes Yes Subscription ($24.99+/yr)
CD Baby Yes Limited Yes Yes Per-release ($9.95+)
DistroKid Yes Yes Yes Yes Subscription ($24.99+/yr)
ONErpm Yes Yes Yes Yes Commission (15%)
Horus Music Strong Asia coverage Yes Yes Yes Subscription (from $30/yr)
PlayTreks Yes Yes Yes Yes Subscription

Tip Merlin Network members (CD Baby, Symphonic, ONErpm, and others) benefit from collective licensing deals with over 30 digital services including Boomplay, JioSaavn, KKBox, and Tencent.

Specialized distributors for specific regions:

  • ONErpm has built strong relationships in Latin America and Africa
  • Horus Music specializes in Asian markets that many distributors overlook
  • TME Music Cloud provides direct access to Chinese platforms for artists and labels outside China

India: Platform Coverage and Considerations

India's streaming market is massive in listeners but modest in per-stream revenue. Spotify leads in paid subscribers (~3 million), but JioSaavn reaches hundreds of millions through its telecom bundling strategy.

What matters for India distribution:

JioSaavn coverage is essential. As the largest domestic platform integrated with India's biggest telecom network, missing JioSaavn means missing a huge portion of the market. Most major distributors now cover JioSaavn.

Expect low per-stream rates. India's average RPM is around $0.08 per 1,000 streams. A million streams in India generates roughly $80, compared to $5,000+ in the US. This reflects local subscription pricing (Spotify Premium costs ~$1.40/month in India vs. $11.99 in the US).

Free-tier dominates. Most Indian listeners use ad-supported or telecom-bundled free tiers. Premium subscriber penetration remains low by Western standards (around 4.3% user penetration versus 30% in the US).

Regional language content drives growth. The Indian market is heavily driven by local-language music. English-language releases from international artists compete for a smaller slice of listening.

Note JioSaavn's tight coupling with Jio telecom is why it survived while Wynk, Hungama, and Resso all shut down. Distribution strategy matters less than platform integration in India.

China: Licensing Complexity and Platform Access

China is the world's fifth-largest recorded music market, but distributing there requires navigating unique challenges.

Licensing has opened up. The 2021 antitrust ruling that ended Tencent Music's exclusive deals means artists can now reach both TME platforms (QQ Music, Kugou, Kuwo) and NetEase Cloud Music through standard distributors.

TME Music Cloud is the bridge. For independent artists outside China, TME's distribution platform handles the complex licensing and rights management required for Chinese distribution. It covers over 200 platforms domestically and internationally.

Content moderation applies. China regulates foreign content. Some releases may face restrictions or require modification for the Chinese market. Work with a distributor experienced in Chinese distribution to navigate these requirements.

Payment and reporting can be opaque. Collecting royalties from Chinese platforms historically involved delays and complexity. Major distributors with established relationships provide more reliable payment flows.

Revenue potential is real. Despite complexity, China's streaming market is large and growing. Tencent Music reported 124.4 million paying users in Q2 2025, with subscription revenue growing 16% year-over-year.

Africa: Mobile-First and High Growth

Africa's music streaming industry is projected to generate close to $500 million by 2025. The market operates on fundamentally different assumptions than Western streaming.

Mobile-first means different product design. African streaming platforms prioritize low data usage, offline downloads, and free access. Boomplay and Audiomack both allow free streaming with offline capability, removing barriers that Spotify's freemium model still presents.

Boomplay's phone distribution deal is a moat. With Boomplay pre-installed on Transsion phones (Tecno, Infinix, Itel), which dominate African markets, the platform has structural distribution advantages that streaming quality alone cannot overcome.

Payment infrastructure challenges exist. International streaming apps face friction from limited credit card adoption. Local platforms integrate with mobile money and telecom billing, making payments accessible to more users.

Afrobeats is going global while growing locally. Spotify reported 22% growth in Afrobeats listeners globally in 2024. Artists building audience on African platforms are positioning for both local and international opportunities.

Warning Per-stream rates in Africa are among the lowest globally. South Africa averages around $0.52 RPM, while other African markets pay less. Volume matters more than per-stream efficiency in this region.

Distributor strategy for Africa:

  1. Ensure your distributor covers Boomplay and Audiomack, not just Spotify
  2. Consider ONErpm or Symphonic if Africa is a primary target market
  3. Accept that revenue will be modest initially, but audience building has long-term value

Revenue Expectations: Volume Over Efficiency

Emerging markets operate on different economics than Western streaming. Understanding the trade-offs helps set realistic expectations. For full per-stream payout rates by platform, see Dynamoi's royalty data.

Market Approximate RPM 1M Streams Yields
United States $5.04 $5,040
United Kingdom $10.06 $10,060
India $0.08 $80
Brazil $0.62 $620
Nigeria ~$0.15-0.30 $150-300
South Africa $0.52 $520

The math is stark: one million streams in the UK generates 125x more revenue than one million streams in India. But India has 1.4 billion people, and the streaming market is growing 15%+ annually.

The long-term case for emerging markets:

  • Subscription prices rise as economies develop
  • Premium subscriber percentages increase with credit card adoption
  • Ad markets mature, improving free-tier monetization
  • Early audience building positions you for improved rates later

The $0.08 Indian RPM of 2025 will not stay that low forever. Artists building audience in emerging markets now are making a bet on future revenue growth.

Choosing a Distributor for Global Reach

If your strategy includes emerging markets, evaluate distributors on regional coverage, not just Spotify and Apple Music.

  1. List your target markets Identify which regions matter for your music. Latin pop? Latin America and Spain. Afrobeats? Nigeria, Ghana, and diaspora markets. K-pop influenced? South Korea and Southeast Asia.

  2. Identify dominant local platforms Use the regional breakdowns above. For India, JioSaavn is essential. For China, Tencent platforms matter. For Africa, Boomplay and Audiomack.

  3. Verify distributor coverage Check your distributor's platform list before signing up. Not all distributors update their coverage information regularly, so verify directly if regional platforms are important to you.

  4. Consider specialized distributors for primary markets If 80% of your target audience is in one region, a specialized distributor (ONErpm for Latin America, Horus for Asia) may provide better service than a generalist.

The default recommendation: Most major distributors (TuneCore, DistroKid, Symphonic, CD Baby) now cover the major regional platforms. If emerging markets are part of your strategy but not the primary focus, any of these will work.

For artists prioritizing specific regions: Consider distributors with regional specialization or direct relationships. The difference in service quality, playlist pitching, and local promotion support can matter more than minor pricing differences.

Distribution to emerging markets is not complicated, but it requires intentionality. Verify coverage before you upload, set realistic revenue expectations, and recognize that audience building in these markets is a long-term investment in future growth.
