An Official Artist Channel (OAC) consolidates your YouTube presence into a single verified destination. Your Art Tracks, uploaded videos, and any Vevo content merge into one channel with the music note icon that signals legitimacy to viewers and the algorithm (see YouTube Help: Introduction to Official Artist Channels).

Without an OAC, your music gets split between an auto-generated Topic Channel and your personal channel. Fans cannot find all your content in one place, and you lose control over how your catalog is presented.

This guide covers exactly how to claim your OAC through each major distributor, the prerequisites you must meet, and the blockers that cause most rejections.

What an OAC Actually Does

When YouTube grants OAC status, it merges subscribers from your Topic Channel, your owned channel, and your Vevo channel (if applicable) into a unified profile. The Subscribe button appears only on your OAC, and your subscriber count consolidates.

You gain access to:

  • A verified music note icon next to your channel name
  • Full control over your channel page layout, featured sections, and playlists
  • Analytics for Artists tools in YouTube Studio
  • Your Art Tracks appearing alongside your uploaded videos

Warning OAC status cannot be undone or transferred to a new channel. If your OAC receives a Community Guidelines strike, it reverts to a standard channel until the strike expires and you meet all other criteria again.

Universal Eligibility Requirements

Regardless of which distributor you use, YouTube requires the following (see YouTube Help: Introduction to Official Artist Channels):

Requirement Details
Single-artist channel Your channel must represent one artist or band, not a label
Official music release At least one release delivered by a YouTube-approved distributor
Name match Your channel name must exactly match your artist name in distributor metadata
Policy compliance No active Community Guidelines strikes or Terms of Service violations
Public video upload At least one public video (YouTube Shorts alone may not qualify)

Your distributor must be listed in the YouTube Services Directory for Music Partners. Most major aggregators qualify: DistroKid, TuneCore, UnitedMasters, AWAL, Ditto, Symphonic, and others.

Claiming Through Your Distributor

Each distributor has slightly different requirements and processes. Here is how to claim through the major platforms.

DistroKid

Additional requirements:

  • Your artist name must appear in the dropdown (wait a few days after your first release goes live)
  • At least one public video uploaded (Shorts do not count)
  • Channel name matches artist name exactly

Steps:

  1. Sign in to DistroKid
  2. Open the Features menu and click Special Access, then YouTube Official Artist Channel
  3. Select your artist from the dropdown
  4. Authenticate your YouTube account
  5. Submit the claim

Timeline: Often a few weeks, sometimes longer depending on backlog and account complexity.

TuneCore

Additional requirements:

  • Artist must be credited as Main/Primary Artist (not Featured Artist)
  • Minimum subscriber and content requirements (varies by region and product)
  • At least one Art Track live on YouTube delivered by TuneCore
  • At least one music video uploaded to your channel is recommended

Steps:

  1. Log in to TuneCore and scroll to Your Artist Accounts
  2. Click the YouTube Official Artist Channel box
  3. Select your artist name from the dropdown
  4. Authenticate the Google account linked to your YouTube channel
  5. Review and confirm your request

Timeline: Often a few weeks, may take longer.

UnitedMasters

Additional requirements:

  • Active and paid UnitedMasters membership
  • At least 3 official releases on YouTube (not just one)
  • At least one full-length video uploaded (Shorts and compilations do not count)
  • No third-party content on your channel (movie clips, other artists' music, news footage)

Steps:

  1. Log in to UnitedMasters
  2. Navigate to the OAC request section
  3. Provide your Topic Channel ID/URL and Personal Channel ID/URL
  4. Confirm your artist name matches exactly across all platforms
  5. Submit for review

Timeline: Varies. Expect weeks, and plan for longer when channel history is complex.

AWAL

Additional requirements:

  • At least one release delivered to YouTube Music (three recommended)
  • Standard YouTube channel representing one artist

Steps:

  1. Log in to your AWAL Workstation
  2. Use the Help Support Tool to contact AWAL
  3. Provide the email address for your YouTube channel and your Spotify Artist Page URI
  4. AWAL submits the request on your behalf

Timeline: Varies based on partner response time plus YouTube processing.

Ditto Music

Additional requirements:

  • Ditto Pro or Label subscription (not available on basic plans)
  • At least three releases active on your YouTube Topic Channel
  • You will need your YouTube Channel ID and Topic Channel ID

Steps:

  1. Log in to Ditto Music
  2. Go to the Artist tab and select your artist
  3. Click YouTube Official Artist Channel
  4. Complete the form with your Channel ID and Topic Channel ID
  5. Submit the application

Timeline: Often a few weeks after submission.

Note Some distributors do not support OAC requests (or gate them behind higher-tier plans). If you cannot find the OAC option in your distributor dashboard, check their support docs and consider switching distributors for this specific feature.

How to Find Your Channel and Topic Channel IDs

Many distributors require you to provide your YouTube Channel ID or Topic Channel ID. Here is how to locate them.

Your owned channel ID:

  1. Go to YouTube Studio
  2. Click Settings > Channel > Basic Info
  3. Your Channel ID appears under Channel URL (starts with UC)

Your Topic Channel ID:

  1. Search for your artist name on YouTube Music or YouTube
  2. Find the auto-generated channel with - Topic in the name
  3. Click on it and copy the URL
  4. The ID is the string after /channel/ (starts with UC)

If you cannot find a Topic Channel, your distributor may not have delivered your music to YouTube yet, or YouTube has not finished processing it. Topic Channels can take weeks to appear after your first release.

Common Blockers and How to Fix Them

Most OAC rejections fall into a few categories. Address these before submitting.

Name mismatch

Problem: Your YouTube channel name does not exactly match your artist name in your distributor's metadata.

Fix: Update your YouTube channel name to match exactly, including capitalization and special characters. Wait 24-48 hours before resubmitting.

No public videos

Problem: You only have Art Tracks (auto-generated videos) and no manually uploaded content.

Fix: Upload at least one public video to your channel. A lyric video, visualizer, or behind-the-scenes clip works. YouTube Shorts alone may not satisfy this requirement for some distributors.

Wrong Topic Channel type

Problem: Your releases are mapped to a Release - Topic or Various Artists - Topic channel instead of an Artist Name - Topic channel.

Fix: This happens with first releases or when YouTube is still processing. Wait approximately 30 days for YouTube to create and populate your proper Artist Topic Channel. Do not submit until you see [Your Artist Name] - Topic as a separate channel.

Label channel submitted

Problem: You submitted a channel that represents multiple artists or a label brand.

Fix: OACs are for single artists or bands only. You need a dedicated channel for each artist who wants an OAC.

Problem: You are only credited as a Featured Artist on releases, not the Primary/Main Artist.

Fix: Release at least one track where you are the Main Artist. Featured artist credits do not qualify for OAC claims.

Community Guidelines violations

Problem: Your channel has active strikes or content with limited features.

Fix: Resolve the violations. Your OAC status will be restored automatically once all strikes expire and you meet other criteria.

What Happens After Approval

Once YouTube processes your OAC claim:

  • Subscribers from your Topic Channel and Vevo channel (if any) merge into your OAC
  • The music note icon appears next to your channel name
  • Your Art Tracks display alongside your uploaded videos on a unified channel page
  • You gain access to Analytics for Artists features

The merge is permanent. You cannot disconnect your OAC or transfer it to a different channel.

Tip After receiving OAC status, customize your channel page immediately. Add featured sections for your latest release, create playlists organized by release or mood, and update your banner and profile to reflect your current branding. This is now your primary YouTube presence.
