Is It Safe to Buy YouTube Views? What YouTube Allows

4 min read

Key takeaway

It depends on who you buy them from. Views from a view seller are not safe: they break YouTube's fake engagement policy, YouTube doesn't count them, and repeat violations can end a channel. Views you pay for through YouTube ads are allowed. They come from real people who chose to watch, and YouTube counts them in your public view count.

What YouTube's policy says about bought views

YouTube's fake engagement policy bans anything that artificially increases views, likes, comments or subscribers. That includes third-party services that sell views and services that inflate live viewer counts.

Three parts of the policy matter if you are thinking about buying views:

  • Bought views don't stay. YouTube does not count artificial traffic in your view count, and it removes subscribers from spam and terminated accounts from your total.
  • The channel pays, not the seller. If you hire someone to promote your channel, YouTube holds you responsible for what they do.
  • Penalties escalate. A first violation usually gets a warning. Repeat violations within 90 days can bring strikes, and three strikes within 90 days can end the channel. YouTube can also remove videos.

Why bought views also hurt the video

YouTube recommends videos to the people most likely to watch them. Views from bots or click farms come with almost no watch time, likes or comments, so the video looks like something people click on and leave.

A music video also needs listeners who come back, subscribe and stream the song elsewhere. Bought views bring none of these. The view count goes up, but the audience doesn't grow.

How buying views through YouTube ads works

YouTube ads are the allowed way to pay for views. You run your music video as an ad through Google Ads or YouTube's built-in Promote tool. YouTube shows it to people who match your targeting, and each person decides whether to watch.

  • You pay per view, not per promise. With cost-per-view bidding, you pay when someone watches 30 seconds of the ad, or the whole ad if it is shorter, or interacts with it.
  • Ad views count publicly. Google says ad views appear in the public view count when viewers watch about as long as an organic view.
  • You choose the audience. Country, language, age and interests decide who sees the video, so the views come from people likely to like your music.

What paid views count toward

Ad views add to your public view count, but they do not help you join the YouTube Partner Program. To join, you need 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 watch hours in 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days (YouTube Help).

YouTube's Promote help page says that watch hours and subscribers from ad campaigns do not count toward those thresholds. Only organic subscribers count. The exception is follow-on views: when a viewer from an Audience Growth promotion goes on to watch more of your videos, those views count.

So run ads to reach new listeners, then let the people who stay build your watch hours. For more on what ad views count toward, see do YouTube ads count toward watch time and monetization.

How to spot a view seller

A service that sells a view count is selling fake engagement, even if it calls the views real. Warning signs:

  • A guaranteed number of views for a fixed price. Ads are sold on budget and targeting, and nobody controls how many people choose to watch.
  • No targeting. You can't choose the country, language or audience.
  • No access to the ad campaign. You can't see an ad account or a campaign report, only a counter going up.
  • Very fast delivery. Thousands of views within hours of payment, usually from countries you didn't choose.
  • Bundles of likes, comments or subscribers. No ad platform sells these.

A legitimate service runs real YouTube ads and shows you where they ran, what they cost and what viewers did next.

The safe way to grow views on a music video

  • Start with the right video. Promote the song people already react to, with a strong first five seconds.
  • Target listeners, not numbers. Pick the countries where your music already streams, plus fans of similar artists.
  • Send viewers somewhere next. Add end screens and a playlist so one paid view can lead to more videos.
  • Judge results by what follows the view: watch time, subscribers and streams.
