Discovery Mode is a Spotify for Artists feature that lets eligible teams select songs they want Spotify to recommend more often in specific contexts like Mixes, Spotify Radio, and Autoplay. Spotify’s rules and surfaces change, so verify the current details in Spotify for Artists documentation: Using Discovery Mode in Spotify for Artists.
It is not guaranteed placement. If listeners do not engage, Spotify can reduce how often the track is recommended over time.
How the 30% commission works
Discovery Mode has no upfront budget. Instead, Spotify applies a 30% commission to recording royalties from streams that happen inside Discovery Mode contexts for selected songs (and related track URIs) during the campaign. Streams outside those contexts are commission-free.
Note Discovery Mode only applies in defined Discovery Mode contexts, not in every playlist or stream source.
Who is eligible
Spotify documents both team-level and track-level requirements. The high-level eligibility gates include having at least 25,000 monthly listeners and at least 3 eligible songs, and distributing through participating distributors.
Spotify also documents track-level requirements, including recent streams in Discovery Mode contexts and meeting monetization eligibility requirements in the previous month.
How to set it up (and when changes take effect)
Discovery Mode runs on a monthly cadence. Spotify documents a setup window between the 11th of the month and 12 AM UTC on the last day of the month, and campaigns start at 12 AM UTC on the 1st of the next month.
When Discovery Mode is worth it
Discovery Mode is most defensible when you apply it to tracks that already show signs of “lean-back” fit:
- They already earn some
Radio/Autoplay/Mixesstreams. - They convert a meaningful share of listeners into intent actions (saves and playlist adds).
It is usually a mistake to turn on Discovery Mode for a track that is being skipped heavily. That is how you pay the commission without building durable audience behavior.
How to judge performance
Spotify provides a Discovery Mode performance report in Spotify for Artists. The simplest way to avoid fooling yourself is to compare the selected track’s Discovery Mode-context performance against its own recent baseline, then stop after one month if engaged lift does not justify the commission.
